40km/h speed limit for Blackwood east
This project is now complete.
Consultation Outcome
Thank you for your feedback on the proposed introduction of a 40 km/h area speed limit in Blackwood east adjacent the Belair Railway line, Belair Hotel, Main Road and Station Road.
We have now completed the evaluation of the feedback received and wish to provide an update of the consultation outcome.
Taking the consultation feedback into account, it was found that the majority of the community was not in support of this proposal, therefore Council will not be introducing a 40km/h speed limit for this area.
It is proposed that Council will continue to collaborate with residents along Station Avenue to monitor and develop more specific traffic management measures as part of its ongoing traffic management process throughout the Council area.
Council would like to thank you for your interest in road safety and for providing feedback on this proposal.

Background
The City of Mitcham sought feedback on the proposed introduction of a 40 km/h area speed limit in Blackwood east adjacent the Belair Railway line, Belair Hotel, Main Road and Station Road.
In March 2021 a traffic study was undertaken which supported the introduction of an area wide 40km/h speed limit. The traffic study collected traffic speed data on 50km/h roads in Blackwood east. The study found that the average speed was 35km/h which supports the Minister for Transport’s guidelines to introduce a proposed speed limit of 40km/h in Blackwood east. Further, the introduction of a lower speed limit will reinforce existing vehicle behaviour on roads.
We sought your feedback on the proposed implementation of a 40km/h speed limit in Blackwood east including Station Road, Carr Street, Station Avenue, Colton Road, Stirling Road, Albert Place, Railway Terrace and Burfield Street as indicated on the Blackwood east plan.
Following consultation, a report including the feedback from the community, will be presented to Council for consideration. If supported by the community and Council a proposal may then be developed for approval from the Minister for Transport for a change in speed limit.
