Have your say on Coromandel Parade road improvements and a car park upgrade for Garnet Avenue adjacent the Hewett Sports Ground

We are inviting your feedback on a design proposal to improve road safety along Coromandel Parade (between Garnet Avenue and Cumming Street) which aims to slow traffic, improve amenity and make the road safer for cyclists and pedestrians.

Background

As part of our ongoing commitment to improving active transport throughout the City of Mitcham, this section of bikeway has been designed as part of a planned active travel network, connecting to an existing bike lane that currently ends at Garnet Avenue.

The Design

The design incorporates an upgrade of the informal parking spaces along Garnet Avenue into formalised indented car parking bays. This is intended to discourage parking along Coromandel Parade to make it safer for passing cyclists and pedestrians. Water sensitive urban design elements will be implemented along Coromandel Parade to reduce water pooling issues, and support the street trees that line this road.

Please note that these projects are Design Only as part of the 2024/25 Capital Works Program and will be implemented subject to future funding.

Road and Kerb Renewal (Design Only) - Coromandel Parade

Renewal of the road and kerbing along Coromandel Parade between Garnet Avenue and Cumming Street incorporates the following elements:

  • Extension of bike lanes along both sides of Coromandel Parade to support active transport usage and improve cyclist safety
  • Kerb and water table improvements including water sensitive design elements to reduce stormwater flow and ponding
  • A new combined cyclist and pedestrian refuge on Coromandel Parade north of Cumming Street
  • Additional footpath segments and extensions to create safer crossing points for pedestrians and cyclists
  • Lighting upgrades near the new crossing / refuge to improve safety

Car Park Renewal (Design Only) - Garnet Avenue

Renewal of the informal parking along Garnet Avenue incorporates the following elements:

  • Indented car parking bays including an accessible car park
  • Kerbing improvements
  • Removal of informal car parking spaces along Coromandel Parade to improve safety

Please share your feedback with us to ensure this project is designed to meet community need and improve safety for all road users

Should you have any queries regarding this project, please contact council’s Project Engineer, Shaikh Uzair on telephone 1300 133 466 or email yoursay@mitchamcouncil.sa.gov.au.

Next Steps

Designs will be finalised incorporating any community feedback received and will be subject to future funding as part of the capital works program.
