We are pleased to be able to announce that the City of Mitcham has been successful in receiving a grant of $500,000, through the State Government’s Open Space Grant Funding Program, towards implementing Stage 1 of the Master Plan for the precinct at Hawthorn incorporating the Airforce Association and former Bowling Greens.

The project will also require a Council funding contribution to proceed, which will be considered in mid-June, when Council sets its Annual Business Plan and Budget for 2024/25.

The project will implement elements of the Master Plan which was endorsed by Council in November 2023. To view a copy of the Master Plan please visit the Your Say page. Stage 1 will include opening the site up through the demolition of the Air Force Association and lean-to buildings, providing a planting buffer, lawns and picnic areas.

Council will be working closely with the Airforce Association to find a suitable alternative meeting space, and hope that the history of the Air Force Association will be reflected through the site.

Other elements including a pavilion, stable activation, pedestrian plaza, and a play space form a future Stage 2.
