Monalta Drive Safety Improvements
Update June 2024
We are excited to update you on the progress of the pedestrian crossing improvements at the intersection of Monalta Drive and Main Road.
Following our community engagement sessions in 2022/2023, we received valuable feedback about enhancing pedestrian access and ensuring a safer crossing for children.
Based on your feedback, we have updated the design to include an intersection upgrade featuring a raised platform/plateau treatment, along with dedicated pedestrian refuge areas for staged crossing movements. Additionally, we have enhanced the line marking, signage, and lighting in the area to improve overall safety and visibility.
We are delighted to announce that these upgrades have been approved and fully funded by the State Government's Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT).
These works are expected to take place during the majority of the July, 2024 school holidays to reduce disruption to the school community. Impacted residents will receive further details via a letter from our civil contractor.
We want to extend our sincere thanks for your input and feedback on this project. Your support has been invaluable in helping us make the precinct safer and more accessible for all residents.
Background
Thank you for your feedback. Consultation has now closed.
A report presenting the consultation outcomes has been sent to the Department of Infrastructure and Transport for further consideration. Progress updates will be provided on this page when available.
Council is committed to improve road safety and traffic conditions for local streets in particular adjacent to local schools. Aligned with this approach, Council is working with Department of Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) and Belair Primary School. Through this process and site investigations, there have been opportunities identified to improve the road safety in the area.
Main Road / Monalta Drive intersection
Main Road functions as a key arterial road within the Mitcham Hills area and it provides access to many land-uses along and abutting to the corridor. Monalta Drive functions as a local collector road and it provides an access to Belair Primary School. The intersection of Main Road and Monalta Drive is one of the key nodes within the local road network. In particular, the management of vehicle speeds, access for pedestrian/children are important considerations.
The proposal includes upgrade to pedestrian facilities by provision of pram ramps and pedestrian refuge. The modifications to kerb alignments would ensure traffic calming for vehicles turning in and out of Monalta Drive. There will be an associated road lighting upgrade which will further enhance road safety during winter months and at night.
