Background

Funding applications were sought regarding locations that were subject to high crash rates and severity within the City of Mitcham area. The Young Street/Waite Street roundabout was successful for funding as part of the Australian Government 2021/2022 Blackspot Program.

    What is the Blackspot Program?

Black Spot projects target road locations where crashes are occurring. By funding infrastructure such as traffic signals and roundabouts at dangerous locations, the program reduces the risk of crashes. Programs of this sort are very effective, saving the community many times the cost of the relatively minor road improvements that are implemented. For individual sites such as intersections, mid-block or short road sections, there should be a history of at least three casualty crashes over a five-year period.

    What’s happening?

The new installation of a roundabout will be constructed with a central annulus with recycled rubber and red linemarked islands on the approaches. Improved lighting and a resurfacing of the intersection with a skid resistant surface will also be included.

Why does this intersection need upgrading?

The existing intersection of Waite Street and Young Street is a four-way intersection controlled with stop signs on the Young Street approaches. A review of the crash history indicates a strong trend in turn type crashes, with most of the crashes caused by failing to give way.

What does this upgrade hope to achieve?

This project will provide improved safety performance to resolve the crash history of right-angle crashes. The roundabout will require road users to reduce their entry speed into the intersection allowing for enhanced sight distance. Roundabouts are also prominent for reducing the level of right angle/right turn crash types.

What are we seeking feedback on?

Based on the improvements, we are hoping to seek feedback from the community in terms of how to improve the current conceptual design, so that in turn we may progress the design to be ready to undertake construction in 2022.
