Consultation has concluded

The Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing (ORSR) and Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) are currently upgrading the Women’s Memorial Playing Fields, St Marys to deliver an enhanced sporting precinct. City of Mitcham submitted a proposal to Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing (ORSR) for a long term arrangement to operate Women’s Memorial Playing Fields, St Marys. Council formally considered the matter at its Council’s Meeting held on 14 September 2021, resolving the following:

That Council write to Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing to submit a proposal to operate Women’s Memorial Playing Fields for the long term, subject to the following:

• Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing to provide a $200,000 operational subsidy each year for three years

• Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing provide a commitment to contribute up to $500,000 of matched funding towards additional infrastructure to enable clubs to relocate and utilise the site without prejudicing the Clubs and or Council from being able to pursue future grant funding opportunities.

• Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing contribute $60,000 and work in partnership with Council to identify potential users and operators and develop a Business case (long term plan for best use of site) and operating model for the site.

• That the Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing gift the land to the City of Mitcham.

With this resolution Council has confirmed its commitment to operate Women’s Memorial Playing Fields subject to the four (4) conditions outlined above being approved by the Office for Sport, Recreation and Racing. Council has further resolved to work in partnership with ORSR and to commit matched funding towards the development of the Business case (long term plan for best use of site) and operating model for the site.

Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing are still currently considering Council's proposal and therefore it is still unknown if City of Mitcham will take over operation of the site.

It should also be noted that the ORSR have advised that a condition of transfer of control will include ensuring that the needs of existing tenants are continued to be met under any and all circumstances.

To assist in understanding the potential use of the site we would like to gain expressions of interests from current City of Mitcham sporting club lease/licence holders and existing WMPF tenants, who subject to Council taking over operations will be interested in relocating or using the site.

All Expressions of Interest are due by midnight Sunday February 6.
