Message from the Mayor

The City of Mitcham is pleased to present its draft Annual Business Plan and Budget 2026-27 and invites our community to have their say.

Given ongoing global fuel cost pressures, Council will undertake a further review of budget impacts in June prior to making a final decision.

Two options are presented for community consideration.

The first proposes a 5.59% rate increase, reflecting the cost of maintaining existing services alongside improvements such as reducing flood risk, upgrading sporting facilities and continued investment in roads and libraries. It also includes new initiatives such as planting more greenery on verges, an electric community bus, improved safety in libraries and community centres and upgrades to local sporting facilities including tennis courts and club buildings.

The second option proposes a 6.65% rate increase. In addition to all initiatives included in the first option, it provides for further targeted improvements, including extended library opening hours, increased maintenance and upgrades of sporting club facilities, additional free green waste drop-off days and enhanced road safety measures in Cumberland Park, Daw Park and Colonel Light Gardens (West).

It also expands Council’s work in environment and sustainability, including community energy programs to help reduce household energy costs, taking further action on climate risks, progress towards a zero-emissions fleet and additional upgrades to stormwater infrastructure to help reduce flooding.

I encourage you to review the draft plan and share your feedback. Consultation is open until 17 May 2026, with all submissions to be considered ahead of Council’s final decision in June.

Dr Heather Holmes-Ross

Mayor, City of Mitcham
