Have your say on a proposal to introduce a 40km/h speed limit in Melrose Park, Clarence Gardens, Pasadena and St Marys

Following the commencement of the South Road Project, the City of Mitcham received several community feedback submissions regarding traffic-related concerns, with the majority requesting to consider the implementation of a 40 km/h speed limit.

As Council does not have the authority to set or manage speed limits, we are required to apply to the Department for Infrastructure and Transport for approval. Below is the process we are following to make sure all the right steps are taken to consider changing the speed limit. Our Traffic and Transport team have undertaken Stages 1 to 3 which support lowering the speed limit across the area to 40km/h.

As part of this process, we are now seeking your feedback on the implementation of a 40km/h area speed limit defined by the areas indicated on the plans in the 'Documents' tab to the right of this page.

Following consultation, a report summarising the feedback will be presented to Council for consideration. If the proposal is supported by both the community and Council, an application will be submitted to the Department for Infrastructure and Transport to approve the speed limit change.

Should you have any further enquiries please contact Council’s Traffic and Transport Team on 1300 133 466 or email yoursay@mitchamcouncil.sa.gov.au.

Considerations for further safety improvements

Based on community feedback, Council will also consider developing the following safety improvement options and interventions in Melrose Park, Clarence Gardens and St Marys, these interventions will also be subject to further community consultation:

  1. Review and development of traffic management strategies to address congestion and safety concerns on Cashel Street.
  2. Consider potential traffic calming measures to reduce speeding and manage traffic volumes on Merriton Avenue and Ragless Street.
  3. Evaluate the need for interventions to improve road safety and manage traffic flow on Corunna Avenue.
  4. Explore options for traffic management to improve road safety and manage traffic flow on Price Street.
  5. Evaluate the need for traffic calming devices or other safety measures to address speeding and through-traffic on Rothersay Avenue.
  6. Focus on safety improvements around Edward Street and the school precinct, including potential crossing enhancements and traffic controls.
  7. Address parking and traffic issues throughout the St Marys area.
  8. Conduct a comprehensive review of the traffic conditions around St Bernadette Primary School.
  9. Explore placemaking initiatives along Goodwood Road to enhance the streetscape and improve traffic and pedestrian experience.
