Stage 2 (between Merriton Avenue and Daws Road)

October 2023 Update

In June 2021, we reached out to you for your invaluable input regarding the proposed enhancement of Dorene Street's streetscape. Our primary objective was to create a cyclist-friendly shared-use space as part of an extensive road improvement project in St Marys. We are pleased to provide you with an update on the upcoming works for Dorene Street Streetscape Upgrade Stage 2, which covers the section between Merriton Avenue and Daws Road.

The collective feedback we received supported moving forward with the proposed enhancements for Dorene Street. These enhancements aim to reduce vehicle speeds, creating a safer environment for all road users, including motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians. Additionally, the project will involve the planting of new street trees to enhance urban greenery and improve the overall streetscape.

In response to community feedback, we have made adjustments to the plans to further encourage reduced vehicle speeds and enhance safety for pedestrians when crossing the road. This will be achieved by incorporating kerb buildouts at road intersections to create a narrower road environment and improve sight distances for pedestrians. These kerb buildouts will also feature garden beds, planted with low-level vegetation, further enhancing the area's urban greenery and aesthetic appeal, all while fostering a cooler and more environmentally-friendly streetscape.

In addition to the improvements mentioned above, this comprehensive project includes enhancements to traffic management, the renewal of footpaths, kerbing, and road pavement, as well as the upgrade of stormwater infrastructure. Moreover, we will install kerb inlets and bottomless stormwater side entry pits to manage stormwater and facilitate its reuse, contributing to the improved health of the area's street trees.

The planned upgrade will integrate the Flinders to City Bikeway into the existing layout while retaining parking lanes and two traffic lanes. As part of the established bikeway, it's important to note that the intersection of Southern Avenue will undergo a priority modification, giving precedence to Dorene Street between Merriton Avenue and Daws Road. This adjustment will provide safer conditions for cyclists and aligns with our commitment to optimising the road network's functionality.

In line with the original concept plan, we have strategically placed speed humps along Dorene Street, designed with cyclists in mind. These humps will be accompanied by designated no-parking zones, and the design accommodates new or planned driveways.

The detailed design for Dorene Street Stage 2 is now finalised. To explore a visual representation of the planned works and access a comprehensive overview of upcoming improvements, you can download the design plans from this page.

Construction is anticipated to commence in early 2024. Prior to the start of the works, our contractors will provide further information on the timing and potential impact of the construction. While we anticipate some inconvenience during these works, both the Council and our contractors are committed to minimising disruptions to the community.

Stage 1 (between Quinlan Avenue and Merriton Avenue)

October 2023 Update

Stage 1 of the Dorene Street upgrade project is nearly complete, and we appreciate your patience during construction and road closures. The final major step is placing the asphalt wearing course, scheduled for October 30th and 31st, 2023, with minor finishing works, particularly at the paved intersections.

In Stage 1, our primary aim was to create a cyclist-friendly shared space in this comprehensive road improvement project in St Marys. Our efforts have focused on reducing vehicle speeds and enhancing safety for all road users. We've introduced new street trees to beautify the urban landscape and enhance the overall aesthetics. To achieve these goals, we've incorporated kerb buildouts at road intersections, creating a narrower road environment that improves visibility and pedestrian safety, while featuring garden beds with low-level vegetation to enhance urban greenery and the overall appearance, promoting a cooler and more environmentally-friendly streetscape. Additionally, the project encompasses traffic management improvements, footpath and kerbing renewal, road pavement upgrades, and stormwater infrastructure enhancements, and the Merriton Avenue pocket park includes a creek bed with over 1,000 native plantings and an SA Water fountain installation.

Important: Intersection Reprioritisation (Stages 1 & 2)

As part of the upgrade, several intersections will undergo a priority modification, giving precedence to Dorene St. The intersections affected include:

  • Southern Avenue & Dorene Street
  • Crystal Avenue & Dorene Street
  • Walsh Avenue & Dorene Street
  • Lloyd Street & Dorene Street
  • Tobruk Avenue & Dorene Street.

These adjustments will provide safer conditions for cyclists and align with the new Flinders to City bikeway. Please exercise caution when traveling through these areas.
