Consultation Outcomes and Council Decision - 17 June 2025

Thank you to those who shared their feedback on the proposed upgrades at Treetop Reserve.

After reviewing the community engagement outcomes, Council has decided to proceed with the following improvements:

  • A new junior play area
  • Shade and seating
  • Greening opportunities
  • A drinking fountain

We heard a range of views about whether a toilet should be included. Many local residents expressed a strong desire to protect the neighbourhood feel of the reserve and to focus on upgrades that support short-stay, family-friendly and inclusive play experiences.

Based on this feedback, Council will move forward with delivering the priority upgrades as listed above, without including a toilet. This approach ensures the project reflects the local community’s priorities, makes best use of available grant funding, and keeps options open for the future if community needs change.

A traffic and pedestrian safety investigation will be conducted around the playground area both before and after the upgrade is implemented. Recommendations aimed at enhancing safety will be presented to Council for further consideration if required.

For more information about the feedback we received please visit our website to read the Council Meeting Agenda and Minutes.

We’re excited to progress the Treetop Reserve upgrade and will keep you updated here as the project moves ahead.

Background

The City of Mitcham sought feedback from the community on two options for the proposed upgrade to Treetop Park Reserve in Craigburn Farm.

Council has received a Community Development Grant from the Australian Government to upgrade facilities at Treetop Park. Since our first consultation, the Craigburn Farm community has grown and how people use the park may have changed.

What we heard last time

When we first asked for your feedback in November 2020, we received 121 survey responses, multiple emails and a petition. Many people supported adding accessible toilet facilities, but we also heard concerns about maintenance, congestion and the potential for unwanted behaviour.

Why we were engaging

At a Special Full Council Meeting held on 25 June 2024, Council considered the detailed community consultation feedback received during the initial consultation, along with the increasing costs and complexity associated with the installation of a toilet facility at Treetop Reserve. For more information please refer to the Council Report tab to the right of this page.

Based on this information, Council resolved to undertake further consultation with the community regarding:

Option 1: Installation of a toilet facility:

  • In the west of the Reserve as originally consulted upon (Option A), or
  • In the northeast of the Reserve (Option B), or

Option 2: Using the funding for other improvements at the reserve, such as,

  • Barbecue
  • Junior play area
  • Associated paths
  • Drinking fountain
  • Bike rack
  • Bike pump and tool station
